Our Recommendation
8.5

Left Side of the Plane

The left side is superior primarily for the approach into Chicago. As flights descend over Lake Michigan or from the east, passengers on the left side are treated to the iconic Chicago skyline, including the Willis Tower and the lakefront parks, whereas the right side overlooks the lake and northern suburbs.

Left Side Highlights
8.5
⛰️

Appalachian Ridges

Stunning views of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians in Central Pennsylvania shortly after departure from ABE.

💧

Susquehanna River

A wide, winding view of one of the oldest river systems in the world as the plane crosses into Western PA.

🌾

Midwestern Grid

Perfectly symmetrical farmland patterns and small towns across Ohio and Indiana, displaying the iconic American heartland.

🏙️

Chicago Skyline

Dramatic views of the Loop, Willis Tower, and Millennium Park during the final descent into O'Hare.

🏟️

Soldier Field

On a clear day and a standard approach, you can spot the historic stadium and the Museum Campus along the lakefront.

The left side is the 'money side' for this route. For the best views of the Chicago skyline, hope for a landing toward the west (Runway 27 or 28); the pilot will often fly out over Lake Michigan and turn back toward the airport, placing the city directly in your window. Evening flights are spectacular as the city lights reflect off the lake.

Right Side Highlights
7.2
🌲

Pocono Mountains

Dense forest views of the Poconos immediately north of the Allentown area during the initial climb.

🌊

Lake Erie Horizon

On clear days, you can see the distant blue horizon of Lake Erie to the north while cruising over Northern Ohio.

🏡

North Shore Suburbs

Detailed views of the affluent 'North Shore' residential areas and Northwestern University campus in Evanston.

⚓

Montrose Harbor

A bird's-eye view of the northern marinas and beach piers just before the plane turns inland for landing.

While you miss the main skyline, the right side offers great views of the Lake Michigan shoreline and the dense northern suburbs. If you are flying during the morning, the right side will be shielded from the direct glare of the sun, making it easier to take photos of the ground and the lake's horizon.
