ADD → HKG
Which side of the plane to sit from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (Addis Ababa) to Hong Kong International Airport (Hong Kong)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers the most dramatic views of the Ethiopian Highlands upon departure, followed by the diverse topography of mainland Southeast Asia and a better angle for the Pearl River Delta urban sprawl during the approach into Hong Kong.
Ethiopian Highlands
Breathtaking views of the rugged 'Roof of Africa' with its deep canyons and high plateaus shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa.
Somaliland Coast
Clear views of the arid coastline where the Horn of Africa meets the Gulf of Aden.
Mumbai & West India
As the flight crosses the Arabian Sea, you often get a glimpse of the dense urban layout of Mumbai and the Western Ghats mountain range.
Irrawaddy River
The winding silver ribbons of the Irrawaddy and Salween rivers as the flight traverses Myanmar.
Annamite Range
The dense, misty mountain ranges crossing Laos and Northern Vietnam.
Pearl River Delta
Vibrant views of the massive megalopolises of Shenzhen and Guangzhou during the descent into HKG.
Most flights from ADD to HKG are overnight, arriving in Hong Kong in the afternoon or early evening. Choose the left side to avoid direct morning sun glare while crossing the Indian Ocean and to catch the sunset over the South China Sea. During the final approach (usually Runway 07), the left side provides the best view of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
Socotra Archipelago
Depending on the specific airway, look south for a glimpse of this unique, biodiversity-rich island in the Indian Ocean.
Laccadive Sea
Deep blue vistas of the Indian Ocean as you pass the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands
The emerald-green clusters of the Andaman islands visible in the middle of the Bay of Bengal.
Hainan Island
The lush, tropical landscapes and coastal resorts of China's southernmost province.
South China Sea Shipping
The world's busiest shipping lanes, featuring hundreds of cargo vessels anchored near the Pearl River entrance.
Lantau Island Peaks
Close-up views of the Big Buddha and the rugged mountains of Lantau Island just before touchdown.
The right side is excellent if the flight path takes a more southerly route across India. If you arrive into HKG from the south (Runway 25), the right side offers spectacular views of the skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island and Victoria Harbour. Be aware that the afternoon sun will be on this side for the second half of the flight, which can be quite intense.
