AIT → AIU
Which side of the plane to sit from Aitutaki Airport (Aitutaki) to Enua Airport (Atiu Island)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers the most iconic views of Aitutaki's world-famous lagoon and its eastern motus (islets) during departure, along with a superior perspective of Atiu's unique raised coral coastline upon arrival.
Aitutaki Eastern Motus
Aerial view of the stunning chain of islets including Akaiami and Tapuaetai (One Foot Island) set against turquoise water.
Lagoon Gradient
The dramatic shift in water color from pale sand bars to the deep electric blue of the inner lagoon.
Humpback Sightings
During winter months (July-October), keep an eye on the deep water just outside the reef for whale breaches.
Atiu Makatea Cliffs
The ancient, jagged raised coral limestone cliffs that encircle the island of Atiu like a fortress.
Enua Approach
A low-altitude view of the reef break and the coastal caves of Atiu as the plane banks for landing.
Book a morning flight to have the sun behind you, illuminating the Aitutaki lagoon colors perfectly. As you depart AIT, the left side usually gets the better view of the eastern reef which is the most photographed part of the Cook Islands. On approach to AIU, look for the 'Makatea' (fossilized coral) which is much more pronounced on this side.
Arutanga Settlement
A view of Aitutaki's main village, the historic Christian church, and the wharf area during initial climb.
Mount Maungapu
The highest point on Aitutaki, offering a perspective of the island's volcanic origins.
South Pacific Horizon
An endless, peaceful view of the deep blue ocean between these remote island outposts.
Atiu Central Plateau
The lush, fertile red-soil center of Atiu, where coffee and tropical fruits are grown.
The right side is excellent for seeing the 'mainland' part of Aitutaki rather than the lagoon. It is also better for observing the interior geography of Atiu, which differs significantly from other islands due to its volcanic center. Ensure you are seated away from the wing on the smaller Saab 340 aircraft often used on this route for the best photo angles.
