ALCDUS

Our Recommendation
8.4

Right Side of the Plane

The right side is generally superior as it offers sweeping views of the Mediterranean coastline upon departure, a stunning transition from the sea to the Pyrenees, and the iconic sight of Cologne Cathedral and the Rhine River during the final approach into Dusseldorf.

Right Side Highlights

🌊

Costa Brava Coastline

Watch the rugged cliffs of northeastern Spain meet the turquoise Mediterranean Sea as the plane tracks toward France.

🏔️

The Alps (Distance)

On clear days, the snow-capped Swiss and French Alps are visible on the far eastern horizon while cruising over France.

⛪

Cologne Cathedral

The massive twin spires of the Koelner Dom are frequently visible on the descent into DUS, located just south of the airport.

🚢

Rhine River

Excellent views of the heavy barge traffic and industrial heartland along the Rhine during the final minutes of flight.

The right side is ideal for morning flights to avoid direct sunlight glare while viewing the Pyrenees. For the best chance to see the Cologne Cathedral during landing, choose a seat slightly behind the wing. This side also provides a unique view of the transition where the Mediterranean meets the Pyrenees near the Gulf of Lion.

Left Side Highlights

🏙️

Benidorm Skyline

Shortly after takeoff, see the massive skyscrapers and white beaches of the Costa Blanca's most famous resort town.

🏔️

Central Pyrenees

Dramatic views of the high peaks along the Spanish-French border, often covered in snow even in late spring.

🏰

Massif Central

Fly over the rugged, volcanic terrain of south-central France, featuring ancient plateaus and deep gorges.

🌲

Ardennes Forest

Dense, rolling green hills as you cross the border regions between France, Belgium, and Germany.

Sit on the left if you are taking a late afternoon or evening flight to enjoy the sunset over the French countryside. This side also offers a better view of the Spanish interior mountains (Serrania de Cuenca) during the first third of the flight. Keep an eye out for the twisting rivers of the Belgian border region.
