Our Recommendation
9.2

Left Side of the Plane

The left side is the clear winner for the iconic 'River Effect' approach into London. As the plane descends into Heathrow, usually from the east, you get a front-row seat to the Shard, Tower Bridge, and the London Eye.

Left Side Highlights

🌊

The North Sea

A brief but vast crossing of the channel separating mainland Europe from the British Isles.

🏢

Canary Wharf

The dense cluster of skyscrapers in London's secondary financial district as you follow the Thames.

🎡

The London Eye

Visible on the south bank of the Thames just before passing the Palace of Westminster.

🏰

Tower Bridge

One of the most recognizable bridges in the world, perfectly framed during the final approach.

🌳

Hyde Park

A massive green lung in the heart of London, marking the final minutes before landing.

Sit on the left (seat 'A') for the best chance of seeing Central London landmarks. Because Heathrow typically operates with westerly winds, planes approach from the east. This flight is short (approx. 45-60 mins), so stay alert as soon as you cross the English coast. Night flights offer a spectacular 'sea of lights' over the capital.

🌷

Dutch Polders

The intricate reclaimed land and canal systems around Amsterdam immediately after takeoff.

🚢

Port of Felixstowe

One of Europe's largest container ports can often be seen as you enter UK airspace.

🏟️

Wembley Stadium

The iconic white arch of England's national stadium is often visible to the north of the flight path.

🏙️

The City of London

Views of the 'Gherkin' and 'Cheesegrater' skyscrapers from a slightly more northern perspective.

📐

Olympic Park

The site of the 2012 Summer Olympics, featuring the ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture.

The right side (seat 'F') is excellent for seeing the North London suburbs and the stadium architecture. It is also the side that avoids the direct sun during a morning flight from Amsterdam to London, reducing glare on your window. If the airport is landing from the West (less common), this side may see Windsor Castle.
