Our Recommendation
9.2

Right Side of the Plane

The right side offers a front-row seat to the dramatic meeting of the Atacama Desert and the Pacific Ocean, featuring the towering coastal cliffs and the unique urban geography of Iquique.

Right Side Highlights
9.2
🌊

The Coastal Cliff (Farellón)

The spectacular 500-meter high cliff system where the desert plateau drops vertically into the crashing Pacific waves.

🏙️

Iquique and Dragon Hill

A perfect aerial view of the city wedged between the sea and the Cerro Dragón, the largest urban sand dune in the world.

⚓

Pisagua Bay

The remote and historic port of Pisagua, appearing as a tiny outpost at the base of enormous desert mountains.

🐳

Mejillones Peninsula

The large, distinctive landmass north of Antofagasta with its deep blue bays and white-sand beaches.

🏭

Salt and Copper Piers

Massive industrial loading terminals at Patache that extend into the ocean, looking like geometric toys from above.

The right side is significantly more dramatic. For the best experience, book an afternoon flight when the sun is in the west, casting a golden light on the coastal cliffs and highlighting the turquoise waters of the Pacific. Near landing, the Mejillones Peninsula provides an excellent sense of the region's unique geography. Avoid wing seats to ensure an unobstructed view of Iquique’s famous sand dunes.

Left Side Highlights
7.5
🌿

Lluta and Azapa Valleys

Vibrant green agricultural ribbons cutting through the monochromatic desert landscape immediately after departure from Arica.

🏜️

Quebrada de Camarones

A massive, deep canyon carved by ancient rivers, showcasing the stark geological layers of the high desert.

🏔️

High Andean Volcanoes

Distant views of snow-capped peaks such as Isluga and the distant silhouettes of the Cordillera de los Andes.

⚪

Salar de Llamara

Bright white patches of salt flats and evaporation ponds contrasting against the deep ochre of the Pampa del Tamarugal.

Sit on the left for morning flights to see the sun illuminating the textures of the Andes. This side is ideal for spotting deep desert canyons and the occasional high-altitude salt flat. Keep an eye out for the giant geoglyphs of the Atacama, though they require a keen eye and clear weather to spot from cruising altitude.
