Our Recommendation
8.9

Right Side of the Plane

While both sides offer scenic views of the Gulf of Mexico, the right side is far superior for the approach into Guatemala City, providing an unparalleled view of the iconic stratovolcanoes like Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango.

Right Side Highlights
8.9
🚢

Mobile Bay

View of the Alabama coastline and the busy shipping lanes of the Port of Mobile.

🌳

Yucatan Jungle

A vast, flat expanse of dense green tropical forest stretching across the Mexican peninsula.

🌋

Volcán de Agua

A massive, perfectly symmetrical extinct volcano that dominates the horizon near the airport.

🔥

Volcán de Fuego

One of the world's most active volcanoes; it is common to see small ash plumes venting from its peak.

⛰️

Acatenango

The twin peak of Fuego, providing a dramatic silhouette against the Pacific horizon.

Sit on the right side for the 'Volcano Alley' experience during landing. The approach into GUA is famous for passing very close to these peaks. For the best lighting on the volcanoes, choose a late afternoon flight when the sun hits the western slopes, or a morning flight to avoid haze.

Left Side Highlights
7.2
🏙️

Atlanta Suburbs

Aerial views of the sprawling Georgia canopy and suburban landscape immediately after takeoff.

🏖️

Emerald Coast

Clear views of the white sands and turquoise waters of the Florida Panhandle and Destin area.

🌊

Yucatan Channel

The deep blue transition where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean Sea near the tip of Mexico.

🏝️

Belize Barrier Reef

Distant glimpses of the coral atolls and turquoise shallows along the Belizean coastline.

⛰️

Sierra de las Minas

The rugged, cloud-forested mountain range in eastern Guatemala during the initial descent.

The left side is excellent for morning flights as the sun rises over the Atlantic/Caribbean, illuminating the coastline. It offers a better perspective of the eastern jungles of Guatemala and the expansive Lake Izabal if the flight path tracks slightly eastward.
