BFLIAH

Our Recommendation
8.5

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers superior views of the Southern Sierra Nevada foothills, the colorful high deserts of Arizona and New Mexico, and the impressive Sandia mountain face near Albuquerque.

Left Side Highlights
8.5
🏔️

Southern Sierra Nevada

Just after takeoff, see the southern edge of the Sierras and the deep blue of Lake Isabella.

🏜️

Mojave National Preserve

Expansive views of volcanic cinder cones and the vast Mojave desert floor.

🎨

Painted Desert

Distant but visible colorful rock layers and plateaus across Northern Arizona.

⛰️

Sandia Mountains

The dramatic, craggy western face of the mountains overlooking Albuquerque, New Mexico.

🏙️

Downtown Houston

If the flight approaches IAH from the north, the left side often catches the skyline in the distance.

Choose the left side for morning departures to avoid direct southern sunlight and glare. This side is particularly scenic during the first 45 minutes of the flight as you climb over the California mountains. In winter, look for snow on the high peaks of New Mexico.

Right Side Highlights
7.8
🌬️

Tehachapi Pass

Thousands of wind turbines dotting the mountain ridges immediately after leaving Bakersfield.

🚀

Edwards Air Force Base

The enormous Rogers Dry Lake bed, a famous landing site for the Space Shuttle.

🌵

Sonoran Desert

Rugged, saguaro-filled landscapes and dry riverbeds across Southern Arizona.

🌊

Pecos River

A winding canyon cut through the arid terrain of West Texas.

🌳

Texas Hill Country

The transition from dry desert to the lush, rolling green hills of central Texas during descent.

The right side is excellent for afternoon flights to witness the sunset over the desert. Keep your camera ready shortly after takeoff for the Mojave Air and Space Port 'boneyard' and the geometric patterns of the dry lakes. This side also offers better views of the Texas Hill Country reservoir system near Austin and San Antonio.
