Which side of the plane to sit from Bora Bora Airport (Bora Bora) to Raiatea Airport (Raiatea Island)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers the most iconic views of Mount Otemanu and the Bora Bora lagoon immediately after takeoff, plus a superior perspective of the Taha'a island coastline during the approach.
Mount Otemanu
The jagged basalt remains of an ancient volcano and the highest point on Bora Bora.
Bora Bora Lagoon
A stunning gradient of electric blue and turquoise waters surrounding the main island.
Matira Point
The southern tip of Bora Bora, famous for its white sand beaches and luxury resorts.
Taha'a Island
Known as the Vanilla Island, you will see its deeply indented bays and lush green ridges.
Motu Pearl Farm
Small islets in the Taha'a lagoon where some of the world's best black pearls are cultivated.
Sit on the left side for the best 'departure show' of Bora Bora. This is a very short flight (approx. 15-20 mins), so keep your camera ready from the moment the aircraft engines rev. Because Air Tahiti often uses open seating for inter-island hops, prioritize boarding early to secure a window on the left. Morning flights provide the best light to see the different shades of the lagoon.
Outer Barrier Reef
The dramatic line where the deep blue Pacific Ocean crashes into the white foam of the reef.
Overwater Bungalows
Aerial views of the luxury resorts situated on the motus (islets) surrounding the lagoon.
Teavanui Pass
The only navigable opening in the reef that allows large ships to enter Bora Bora's lagoon.
Maupiti Horizon
On clear days, the distant silhouette of Maupiti island can be seen to the far west.
While the right side focuses more on the open ocean and the reef's edge, it is excellent for capturing the scale of the Pacific. If you are flying during the late afternoon, the right side will offer a beautiful view of the sun beginning to set over the ocean. Keep an eye out for humpback whales during the migration season (July to October) in the deep waters between the islands.
