BOOSVJ

Which side of the plane to sit from Bodø Airport (Bodo) to Svolvær Helle Airport (Svolvær)?

Our Recommendation
9.8

Left Side of the Plane

While both sides are world-class, the left side offers the definitive view of the 'Lofotveggen' (The Lofoten Wall) rising dramatically out of the Arctic Ocean as you approach the archipelago from the south.

Left Side Highlights
9.8
🌊

Vestfjorden Crossing

The expansive stretch of open sea separating the mainland from the islands, often dotted with fishing vessels.

🏔️

Lofotveggen Panorama

The iconic 100km long wall of granite peaks that defines the Lofoten skyline as it grows larger on the horizon.

🏘️

Henningsvær

Look down to see the world-famous football pitch and the interconnected islands of this historic fishing village.

🐋

Skrova Island

A flat, scenic island known as the 'Hawaii of Lofoten' with white sand beaches and a distinct lighthouse.

Prepare your camera immediately upon takeoff; the flight is exceptionally short (20-30 minutes). During summer, the 24-hour daylight provides perfect visibility, but an evening flight under the Midnight Sun creates an incredible golden glow on the Lofoten Wall. Ask for a window seat away from the propeller if flying on a Widerøe Dash-8 for an unobstructed view.

Right Side Highlights
9.2
🏝️

Landegode Island

A dramatic island just north of Bodø featuring steep cliffs and the Landegode Fyr lighthouse.

⛰️

Steigen Mountains

To the east, the rugged and less-visited peaks of the mainland coast provide a stunning backdrop.

🐐

Svolværgeita

On final approach, look for the famous 'Svolvær Goat' rock formation with its two distinct horns overlooking the town.

⚓

Svolvær Harbor

A bird's-eye view of the bustling harbor, rorbuer (fisherman cabins), and the coastal steamer (Hurtigruten) if it is in port.

The right side is superior for seeing the proximity of the mountains to the town of Svolvær during the final descent. In winter, this side is excellent for spotting the Aurora Borealis if flying at night, as you are looking away from the setting sun toward the northern horizon. Keep an eye out for the white sand beaches of the Steigen region shortly after departing Bodø.
