Our Recommendation
8.9

Left Side of the Plane

The Left Side offers the most dramatic views of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), including the highest glaciated peaks of the Romanzof Mountains and the spectacular Mount Michelson.

Left Side Highlights
8.9
🌊

Beaufort Sea Ice

Stunning views of the Arctic Ocean pack ice and coastal lagoons immediately after takeoff from Barter Island.

🏔️

Mount Michelson

One of the highest peaks in the Brooks Range, standing at nearly 9,000 feet, providing a jagged, snow-capped horizon.

⛰️

Romanzof Mountains

A majestic sub-range of the Brooks Range featuring some of the only glaciers found in the American Arctic.

🦌

Coastal Plain Tundra

The expansive '1002 Area' of ANWR, a critical calving ground for the Porcupine Caribou herd.

🌲

Yukon Flats Wetlands

The transition into the vast interior wetlands, dotted with thousands of shimmering thermokarst lakes.

Sit on the left for the best orientation toward the sun during midday flights to avoid glare while looking south. In winter, this side offers the best chance to spot the Aurora Borealis if flying during the long polar night. Keep a close eye on the river valleys below for movement of caribou or muskoxen on the coastal plain.

Right Side Highlights
8.5
🏖️

Camden Bay

A wide arctic bay known for whale sightings and the stark boundary where the tundra meets the sea.

🏞️

Canning River Valley

The western boundary of ANWR, showing a massive, braided river system carved by glacial melt.

🏔️

Franklin Mountains

Rugged peaks and deep canyons of the central-north Brooks Range region.

🛶

Sheenjek River

A designated Wild and Scenic River that meanders through some of the most remote wilderness in North America.

🦅

Yukon River Confluence

The dramatic approach into Fort Yukon where the Porcupine River meets the mighty Yukon River.

The right side is excellent for seeing the transition of ecosystems from Arctic tundra to the high alpine and finally the boreal forest (taiga). Since Fort Yukon is located on the Arctic Circle, the light during the summer 'Midnight Sun' creates incredible golden hour conditions for photography of the winding river systems.
