CAI â LXR
Which side of the plane to sit from Cairo International Airport (Cairo) to Luxor International Airport (Luxor)?
Right Side of the Plane
The Right Side offers a spectacular gallery of Egypt's most iconic monuments, from the ancient pyramid fields of Saqqara and Dahshur shortly after takeoff to the dramatic limestone cliffs of the Theban Necropolis upon descent into Luxor.
The Pyramid Fields
A sequence of world-famous sites including Saqqara's Step Pyramid and the unique Bent and Red Pyramids of Dahshur.
Libyan Desert
The vast, golden expanse of the Western Desert featuring dramatic limestone escarpments.
Valley of the Kings
The rugged, sun-bleached hills of the Theban mapping where the pharaohs were buried.
Hatshepsut Temple
The stunning terraced mortuary temple carved directly into the limestone cliffs of Deir el-Bahari.
Colossi of Memnon
Two massive stone statues standing guard over the ancient West Bank floodplains.
For the most iconic views, the right side is unbeatable. Shortly after departure from Cairo, look back and to the right to spot the Pyramids of Giza in the distance, followed quickly by the closer pyramids of Saqqara. On the descent into Luxor, stay glued to the window to see the West Bank's archaeological treasures. Afternoon flights on this side will face the sun, so bring sunglasses or a polarizer for your camera.
The Green Ribbon
The stark, linear contrast between the lush green agricultural land of the Nile Valley and the barren desert sand.
Eastern Desert Wadis
Deep, winding dry riverbeds carved into the high desert plateaus of the Maaza region.
Nile River Meanders
Clear views of the river's path and the traditional feluccas sailing near the cities of Minya and Asyut.
Red Sea Hills
On clear days, the jagged peaks of the Eastern Desert mountain range are visible on the far horizon.
Karnak Temple
As the plane banks for its final approach into LXR, the massive columns and pylons of Karnak are often visible.
Choose the left side for morning flights to keep the sun behind you, providing the best lighting for photography of the Nile's fertile banks. This side is also excellent for viewing the expansive Eastern Desert plateau and catching a glimpse of the vast Karnak Temple complex just before landing at Luxor International.
