Which side of the plane to sit from Craig Cove Airport (Craig Cove) to Uléi Airport (Ambryn Island)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side provides a direct and dramatic view of Ambrym's volcanic heart, including the massive central caldera and the active vents of Mount Marum and Mount Benbow.
Mount Marum
One of the two primary active volcanic cones, often seen venting steam or sulfurous gas.
Mount Benbow
The secondary active vent located within the massive 12km-wide central caldera.
The Ash Plain
A vast, barren, lunar-like desert of black volcanic ash surrounding the active craters.
Volcanic Plumes
Steady streams of white and grey gas rising from the heart of the island's interior.
Black Sand Beaches
Striking shorelines composed entirely of volcanic basalt near the approach to Uléi.
This is a world-class scenic flight. Sit on the right to see the 'Black Desert' ash plains. Flights are very short (approx. 15-20 minutes), so have your camera ready immediately after takeoff from Craig Cove. Morning flights are highly recommended as clouds often obscure the volcanic peaks by the afternoon.
Northern Coastline
Dramatic volcanic cliffs and rugged shorelines where the jungle meets the Coral Sea.
Pentecost Island
On clear days, the neighboring island to the north is visible across the Selwyn Strait.
Lush Rainforests
Dense tropical canopies covering the lower northern slopes of the island's peaks.
Coastal Villages
Small, traditional Ni-Vanuatu settlements scattered along the remote northern perimeter.
Look northward to spot the outline of Pentecost Island. While the right side has the volcanoes, the left side offers a more tranquil view of the deep blue Pacific and the island's dense biodiversity. The low flight altitude typical for this route allows for spotting small boats near the shore.
