CTU → LXA
Which side of the plane to sit from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (Chengdu) to Lhasa Gonggar Airport (Lhasa)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers a premier view of the 'King of Sichuan Mountains,' Mount Gongga (Minya Konka), and follows the dramatic transition from the Sichuan Basin to the high Himalayan peaks.
Mount Gongga (Minya Konka)
The highest peak in Sichuan at 7,556m, standing prominently above the surrounding ridges.
Yalong River Gorges
Deeply carved river valleys that showcase the immense vertical scale of the Hengduan Mountains.
Yarlung Tsangpo River
The flight descends parallel to this massive river valley as it approaches Lhasa.
Hengduan Mountain Range
A series of parallel snow-capped ridges and deep valleys running north to south.
Lancang (Mekong) River
Aerial view of the upper reaches of one of Southeast Asia's most important rivers.
Book a window seat on the A-side for morning flights to get the best light on Mount Gongga. Look south about 30-40 minutes after takeoff from CTU. In winter, the snow cover on the peaks is most dramatic, but summer offers lush green valleys between the snow-caps.
Mount Siguniang
The 'Four Sisters Mountain' features four distinct peaks, with the highest reaching 6,250m.
Alpine Glacial Lakes
Numerous small, turquoise-colored high-altitude lakes scattered across the plateau.
Nyenchen Tanglha Range
Glaciated peaks that dominate the horizon as the flight nears the Lhasa region.
Sichuan Basin Edge
Watch the dramatic rise of the Tibetan Plateau as it meets the low-lying plains of Chengdu.
The right side (L-side) is excellent for viewing the broader expanse of the Tibetan Plateau. It offers a great perspective of Mount Siguniang early in the flight. Best in late morning when the sun is high enough to illuminate the north-facing glacial bowls.
