Our Recommendation
8.7

Left Side of the Plane

While both sides offer stunning views of the Cascades upon arrival, the left side provides the most iconic close-up of Mount Hood and the National Mall landmarks during the DCA departure.

Left Side Highlights
8.7
🏛️

National Mall & Potomac

Immediate views of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the US Capitol if departing on the River Visual.

🏜️

Badlands National Park

The striking, eroded sedimentary layers of the South Dakota Badlands are visible during the mid-continental crossing.

🏔️

Mount Hood

The absolute highlight of the trip; a massive, snow-capped stratovolcano that appears very close during the descent into Portland.

🌊

Columbia River Gorge

Breathtaking views of the steep basalt cliffs and waterfalls lining the southern edge of the Columbia River.

🏙️

Downtown Portland

Excellent views of the Willamette River and the city skyline during the final approach to PDX.

Sit on the left for the best chance to see the 'River Visual' departure at DCA, which follows the Potomac. For the best lighting on Mount Hood, choose a late afternoon flight when the sun illuminates the western face of the mountain. Keep your camera ready as soon as you cross the Idaho-Oregon border.

Right Side Highlights
8.3
🏢

The Pentagon

A clear aerial view of the world's largest office building and Arlington National Cemetery shortly after takeoff.

🌊

Lake Michigan

On more northerly routes, the vast blue expanse of the Great Lakes is visible near the Chicago flight corridor.

🏔️

Mount Adams

The second-highest peak in Washington state, often visible standing prominently to the north of the flight path.

🌋

Mount St. Helens

Incredible views of the famous horseshoe-shaped crater left by the 1980 eruption as you enter the final descent.

🌲

Gifford Pinchot Forest

Dense, carpeted evergreen forests stretching across the southern Washington wilderness toward the horizon.

The right side is superior for volcano enthusiasts who want to see the crater of Mount St. Helens. On morning flights, this side will have less glare during the westward journey. If the flight path takes a northern track, look for the distant skylines of Minneapolis or Milwaukee.
