DKR → TFN
Which side of the plane to sit from Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport (Dakar) to Tenerife Norte Airport (Tenerife)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side offers a spectacular front-row seat to the dramatic meeting point of the Sahara Desert and the Atlantic Ocean, followed by views of the other Canary Islands during the approach.
Cap Vert Peninsula
A clear view of the westernmost point of mainland Africa and the city of Dakar immediately after takeoff.
Banc d'Arguin
The UNESCO-listed Mauritanian coastline featuring shallow turquoise waters contrasting with white sandbanks.
Sahara-Ocean Contrast
The dramatic line where the orange dunes of Western Sahara meet the crashing waves of the Atlantic.
Nouadhibou Bay
The famous bay near the Mauritania-Western Sahara border, known for its ship graveyards and industrial iron ore piers.
Gran Canaria Profile
As you enter the Canary archipelago, the circular volcanic silhouette of Gran Canaria appears clearly to the east.
Anaga Rural Park
Breathtaking views of the lush, jagged mountain ridges of northeast Tenerife during the final approach into TFN.
The right side is significantly more scenic for this route. For the best photography of the Saharan coastline, aim for a morning flight when the sun illuminates the desert sands from the east. This side also provides the best views of the neighboring Canary Islands (Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria) as you fly past them. Be aware that the dust from the 'Calima' wind can sometimes obscure the desert views, making the coastline appear hazy.
Deep Atlantic Horizon
Uninterrupted views of the deep blue Atlantic Ocean for the majority of the flight duration.
Sunset Views
On late afternoon or evening flights, this side provides incredible golden hour light and sunset reflections over the water.
Mount Teide Peak
As the plane turns to align with Tenerife Norte's runway, the massive 3,715m volcanic peak often becomes visible to the west.
Santa Cruz Waterfront
During the final descent into TFN, the rugged northern cliffs and the capital city's outskirts are visible.
Choose the left side if you are flying during the late afternoon to avoid direct sunlight and enjoy the sunset. Keep your camera ready during the final 15 minutes of the flight; if the approach path takes you around the north of the island, the view of Mount Teide rising above the clouds is iconic. Note that TFN is often cloudy (the 'donkey's belly' effect), so visibility may drop suddenly during descent.
