DPS → SYD
Which side of the plane to sit from Ngurah Rai (Bali) International Airport (Denpasar) to Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (Sydney)?
Left Side of the Plane
The Left Side is generally preferred for this route, particularly for the iconic approach into Sydney. It offers superior views of the Bali coastline upon departure and, most importantly, provides the best chance of seeing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House if the aircraft lands toward the south, which is the most frequent arrival pattern.
Mount Agung
Shortly after takeoff from DPS, catch views of Bali's highest and most sacred stratovolcano towering over the island.
Lombok Coastline
Clear views of the Gili Islands and the rugged volcanic terrain of neighboring Lombok during the initial climb.
The Channel Country
Witness the intricate, braided river systems of outback Queensland and New South Wales as you traverse the continent.
Hunter Valley
As the descent begins, the lush green vineyards and rolling hills of Australia's premier wine region are visible to the north of Sydney.
Sydney Harbour
On the 'standard' arrival (Runway 16), this side offers world-class views of the CBD, Harbour Bridge, and Opera House.
Sit on the left for the best lighting conditions on daytime flights, as the sun will be on the opposite side. This side is the 'gold standard' for the Sydney arrival; however, be aware that if the wind dictates a northern landing (Runway 34), you will see the southern beaches instead. For early morning flights, the sunrise over the Pacific as you approach the Australian coast is spectacular.
Nusa Penida
Look down shortly after takeoff to see the dramatic limestone cliffs and turquoise waters of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.
The Great Sandy Desert
Deep red dunes and vast, uninhabited expanses of the Australian interior as the flight crosses into Western Australia.
Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre
Depending on the flight path, you may see the vast salt pans of Australia's largest lake shimmering in the distance.
Blue Mountains
During the descent into Sydney, the hazy blue sandstone cliffs and deep eucalyptus-filled valleys appear to the west.
Cronulla & Royal National Park
If landing from the south, you'll get a beautiful view of the world's second-oldest national park and the southern surf beaches.
The right side is excellent for viewing the 'Red Centre' geography of Australia during the mid-flight duration. If you are on an afternoon flight, be prepared for significant sun glare and heat from the window as you head southeast. For the best views of the Blue Mountains during descent, choose a seat behind the wing to ensure an unobstructed downward line of sight.
