Our Recommendation
7.5

Left Side of the Plane

The Left Side is generally preferred for this eastward flight as it avoids the harsh southern sun and offers a superior view of Omdurman and the main Nile channel upon the descent into Khartoum.

Left Side Highlights
7.5
🌵

Darfur Sands

Immediately after takeoff, view the vast, rippling sand dunes and seasonal wadis of the North Darfur plateau.

⛰️

Isolated Inselbergs

Spot ancient, weathered granite peaks protruding from the flat desert floor across the North Kordofan region.

🏙️

Omdurman Urban Sprawl

During the descent, witness the dense, sprawling grid of Omdurman, Sudan's largest city and cultural heart.

🌊

The Main Nile

As the plane turns for its final approach, enjoy views of the Main Nile flowing north toward the Sahara.

Opt for an afternoon flight on the left side to keep the sun behind you. This side provides the best angle for photography of the desert textures and the vast urban landscape of Omdurman without solar glare. Look for the distinct change in soil color from the red sands of Darfur to the grey-brown silt of the Nile valley.

🐫

Kordofan Steppe

Observe the transition from true desert to the Sahelian steppe, often dotted with nomadic livestock trails.

💧

White Nile Contrast

The sudden appearance of the White Nile's green banks provides a stunning visual break from the arid surroundings.

🚜

Gezira Irrigation

On the final approach, you can often see the northern fringes of the massive Gezira agricultural scheme south of the city.

🤝

The Al-Mogran Confluence

Depending on the landing pattern, you may see the exact point where the Blue and White Niles merge.

The right side is excellent for spotting the White Nile as it snakes up from the south. Keep an eye out for the 'Mogran' (the confluence), which is most visible if the aircraft approaches from the south or east. Be aware that the sun will be on this side for much of the day, so window shades may be necessary during the cruise phase.
