ELPAUS

Our Recommendation
8.5

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers a front-row seat to the most dramatic terrain in Texas, including the highest peak in the state and the scenic Highland Lakes upon arrival.

Left Side Highlights
8.5
⛰️

Guadalupe Peak

The highest point in Texas, rising dramatically from the desert floor about 100 miles east of El Paso.

⚪

Salt Basin

Expansive white salt flats located just west of the Guadalupe Mountains, visible shortly after takeoff.

🏢

Permian Basin Cities

A clear view of the Midland and Odessa metropolitan areas and their surrounding industrial infrastructure.

💧

Highland Lakes

A sequence of blue reservoirs including Lake Travis and Lake Austin as you enter the Hill Country.

🏙️

Austin Skyline

Excellent views of the growing downtown skyline during standard north-to-south landing approaches.

Sit on the left for morning flights to keep the sun behind you. The Guadalupe Mountains appear roughly 15-20 minutes after departure; they are the most significant mountain view in the state. As you descend, watch for the limestone cliffs of the Balcones Escarpment.

Right Side Highlights
7.2
🌵

Rio Grande

The international boundary between the US and Mexico is visible immediately following takeoff from El Paso.

🌋

Davis Mountains

Distant views of this dark, volcanic mountain range to the southeast of the main flight path.

⛽

Oil Field Grids

Intricate geometric patterns of thousands of oil wells and access roads stretching across the West Texas plains.

🌳

Edwards Plateau

Rugged ranch land characterized by deep canyons and dense cedar breaks south of the flight path.

🌊

Colorado River

The winding river valley visible south of the aircraft as it makes its final approach into Austin.

The right side is the best choice for evening flights to catch the sunset over the desert horizon. Look for the massive wind turbine farms near Sweetwater if the flight path is slightly north. You will also have a better view of the San Antonio area at a distance if the sky is clear.
