Which side of the plane to sit from Zvartnots International Airport (Yerevan) to Chelyabinsk Balandino Airport (Chelyabinsk)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers a front-row seat to the most dramatic peaks of the Greater Caucasus, including Europe's highest point, Mount Elbrus, and the rugged transition into the Southern Urals.
Mount Aragats
Armenia's highest peak, visible almost immediately after takeoff with its four jagged summits.
Mount Elbrus
The snow-capped dormant volcano and highest peak in Europe, standing prominently on the western horizon.
Greater Caucasus Range
A spectacular wall of jagged, glaciated peaks separating Georgia and Russia.
Volga River System
Large stretches of the Volga and its reservoirs as the flight crosses into central Russia.
Southern Ural Mountains
The ancient, forested ridges marking the boundary between Europe and Asia as you approach Chelyabinsk.
Sit on the left for the best mountain photography. For flights departing Yerevan in the morning, the sun will be behind you, providing excellent illumination of the Caucasus range. Keep your camera ready about 20-30 minutes after takeoff for the highest peaks. As you enter Russian airspace, look for the sharp contrast between the mountain slopes and the vast, flat plains.
Lake Sevan
The blue expanse of Armenia's largest lake, visible shortly after departure to the east.
Mount Kazbek
One of the major peaks of the Caucasus, often visible rising above the surrounding ridges.
Caspian Sea Horizon
On clear days, the distant shimmer of the world's largest inland body of water can be seen to the far east.
Samara Bend
The massive loop of the Volga River around the Zhiguli Mountains near the city of Samara.
Eurasian Steppe
Endless agricultural mosaics and geometric patterns of the Russian heartland.
The right side is ideal for seeing Lake Sevan shortly after takeoff. During mid-flight, scan the horizon for the glint of the Caspian Sea. On the final approach into Chelyabinsk, this side offers great views of the numerous small, circular lakes characteristic of the Trans-Ural region. Avoid this side on late afternoon flights if you want to avoid direct sunlight glare.
