FRA → KIX
Which side of the plane to sit from Frankfurt am Main Airport (Frankfurt) to Kansai International Airport (Osaka)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side provides a superior vantage point for the dramatic mountain ranges of the Caucasus and Central Asia, along with a more scenic approach into Osaka Bay.
Caucasus Mountains
Spectacular snow-capped peaks including Mount Elbrus, the highest point in Europe.
Caspian Sea
Tracing the southern coastline of the planet's largest inland body of water.
Tien Shan Range
The 'Heavenly Mountains' offer jagged, glacial peaks that are among the most scenic on the route.
Loess Plateau
Unique terraced agricultural patterns carved into China's yellow-silt highlands.
Seto Inland Sea
A stunning archipelago of thousands of islands during the descent into the Kansai region.
Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
One of the world's longest suspension bridges visible just before landing at KIX.
The right side is the 'mountain side.' To see the Caucasus and Tien Shan ranges clearly, aim for a window seat away from the wing's obstruction. Since KIX is an island airport, the right side usually offers the best view of the Japanese coastline and the airport's impressive man-made structure during the final turn for landing. Be aware that the sun will be on this side for much of the day, so keep the window shade handy.
Kazakh Steppe
Infinite horizons of the world's largest dry steppe region across Central Asia.
Gobi Desert
The northern edge of the desert featuring stark, arid landscapes and shifting colors.
Beijing Outskirts
On clear days, the sprawling urban periphery and mountainous borders of northern China are visible.
Yellow Sea
The transition from the Asian mainland to the maritime environment of the Korean Peninsula.
Sea of Japan
Deep blue waters and potential sightings of shipping lanes heading toward the Kanmon Strait.
Sit on the left to avoid the harsh southern sun during the middle of the flight. For late-night departures from Frankfurt, this side offers the best chance to see the sunrise over the horizon as you cross into East Asia. It is also the side for potential (though rare) views of the Aurora Borealis if the flight path takes a more northerly trajectory during winter.
