FRA â LAS
Which side of the plane to sit from Frankfurt am Main Airport (Frankfurt) to McCarran International Airport (Las Vegas)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers a superior sequence of iconic landmarks, featuring the southern Greenland fjords, the dramatic canyons of the American Southwest, and the best chance to see the Las Vegas Strip during the final descent.
Southern UK & London
Clear views of the Thames Estuary and the sprawling London metropolitan area shortly after reaching cruising altitude.
Greenland Icefjords
Dramatic views of the southern tip of Greenland, featuring jagged coastal mountains and massive icebergs breaking off into the North Atlantic.
Great Lakes Region
As the flight crosses into the US, you often pass the southern shores of Lake Superior or Lake Michigan, showing the scale of the world's largest freshwater system.
Colorado Rockies
Aerial perspective of the snow-capped peaks of the Front Range and the high-altitude continental divide.
Grand Canyon
Depending on the specific flight path, the left side frequently captures the deep orange hues and winding paths of the Grand Canyon's eastern section.
The Las Vegas Strip
On the standard approach to Runway 26L/R, the left side provides a front-row seat to the mega-resorts and neon lights of the Strip just before touchdown.
Sit on the left (Port) side for the highest probability of seeing the Las Vegas Strip on arrival. Since this is a westbound flight departing Frankfurt in the morning/midday, the sun will be on the left side (south) for much of the journey; keep your window shade down during the ocean crossing to avoid glare, then open it as you reach the Canadian/US border. Polar routes can offer views of Northern Lights if the flight is during winter and passes through northern latitudes in darkness, though this specific route is mostly during daylight hours.
Scottish Highlands
Beautiful views of the rugged Scottish terrain and the Hebrides islands as the aircraft begins its trans-Atlantic crossing.
Greenland Ice Sheet
A vast, mesmerizing expanse of pure white ice that stretches to the horizon, often visible for over an hour of flight time.
Hudson Bay
The flight often tracks over the northern reaches of Canada, providing views of the desolate, frozen beauty of the Hudson Bay shoreline.
Great Salt Lake
As you descend toward Nevada, the right side often gets a perfect view of the stark white salt flats and the turquoise waters of Utah's Great Salt Lake.
Valley of Fire
Just minutes before landing, look for the brilliant red sandstone formations of the Valley of Fire State Park and the nearby Lake Mead.
Mt. Charleston
The high peaks of the Spring Mountains tower over the desert landscape to the north of the city during the final approach.
The right side (Starboard) is excellent for photography of the Greenland Ice Cap because you are facing north, away from the direct sun, which reduces glare and improves contrast for photos. This side also offers exceptional views of the Great Salt Lake and the 'Red Rock' areas of Nevada. During the final approach into LAS, while you might miss the Strip itself, you will get a great view of the surrounding mountain ranges and the vast suburban expanse of the Vegas Valley.
