Our Recommendation
8.7

Right Side of the Plane

The Right Side (Starboard) is generally superior on this route as it offers sweeping views of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, and the lush agricultural landscapes of the Amhara region immediately after departure.

Right Side Highlights
8.5
💧

Lake Tana

Ethiopia's largest lake, dotted with historic island monasteries, is clearly visible shortly after takeoff from Gondar.

🌊

Tis Abay

On clear days, the mist from the Blue Nile Falls can sometimes be spotted where the river exits Lake Tana.

🏔️

Mount Guna

A massive shield volcano peak that dominates the landscape of the South Gondar Zone.

🌲

Entoto Hills

The eucalyptus-covered ridges surrounding Addis Ababa indicate the final approach into the capital.

The right side is essential for seeing Lake Tana. For the best photography, book a morning flight when the water is calm and the sun is behind the plane. If the flight path takes a western loop, you may get a direct view of the Blue Nile's exit point. Be aware of seasonal haze during the dry season (December to February) which can obscure distant mountain details.

⛰️

Semien Mountains Edge

As you ascend from Gondar, the southern fringes of the dramatic Semien range are visible to the north-east.

🌊

Blue Nile Gorge Crossing

Deep, winding canyons carved by the Abbay River provide a stunning display of erosion and geological history.

🏘️

Highland Tukuls

Bird's-eye views of traditional Ethiopian villages with distinctive circular thatched-roof huts dotting the plateaus.

🏙️

Addis Urban Sprawl

During the descent into Bole International, the left side often faces the city center and the growing skyline.

Choose the left side for late afternoon flights to avoid the direct western sun. This side is also excellent for viewing the dramatic change in elevation as the plane crosses the Blue Nile's deep volcanic gorges. Keep your camera ready about 20 minutes into the flight for the best canyon views.
