HER → RHO
Which side of the plane to sit from Heraklion International Nikos Kazantzakis Airport (Heraklion) to Diagoras Airport (Rhodos)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers spectacular views of the Cretan coastline upon departure and the potential to spot the volcanic archipelago of Santorini in the distance. During the approach to Rhodes, it provides the best angle for viewing the historic Rhodes Town and the northern coastline.
Dia Island
A small, uninhabited island shaped like a lizard, clearly visible shortly after takeoff from Heraklion.
Santorini Caldera
On exceptionally clear days, look north to spot the distinctive crescent-shaped volcanic island of Santorini on the horizon.
Cretan Sea
The deep azure waters of the northern Aegean, often dotted with ferries and cargo ships traveling between Piraeus and the islands.
Rhodes Old Town
As the plane descends into Diagoras Airport, the left side typically faces the medieval city and the Palace of the Grand Master.
Mandraki Harbour
The historic harbor where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood is often visible during the final approach pattern.
Book a window seat forward of the wing to avoid engine heat haze. This side is superior for morning flights as the sun will be on the opposite side, providing perfect lighting for photos of the Dodecanese islands. Look for the white-washed villages of the northern Dodecanese chain as you approach Rhodes.
Dikti Mountains
The rugged mountain range of eastern Crete, including the Lasithi Plateau, visible during the initial climb.
Mirabello Bay
The large, stunning bay near Agios Nikolaos, showcasing the varying shades of blue of the Cretan coast.
Kasos & Karpathos
Direct views of these rugged, mountainous islands situated halfway between Crete and Rhodes.
Prasonisi
The southernmost tip of Rhodes, known as a windsurfing paradise where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas meet.
Western Rhodes Cliffs
Dramatic limestone cliffs and the pine-forested hills of western Rhodes during the final descent into RHO.
The right side is ideal for seeing the 'bridge' of islands (Kasos and Karpathos) that link Crete to Rhodes. If flying in the late afternoon, be prepared for some glare as the sun moves toward the west. This side is excellent for viewing the wild, uninhibited southern landscapes of the Dodecanese.
