Our Recommendation
8.2

Right Side of the Plane

The right side offers a prime view of the massive open-pit mines immediately after takeoff from Hibbing and typically provides the most iconic views of the Minneapolis skyline and the Chain of Lakes during the descent into MSP.

Right Side Highlights
8.2
⛏️

Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine

Known as the 'Grand Canyon of the North,' this massive active mine is clearly visible right after departure from HIB.

🛶

Mississippi River Headwaters

Aerial views of the winding upper Mississippi River as it snakes through the lake country.

🏙️

Minneapolis Skyline

A spectacular view of the skyscrapers including the IDS Center and the Wells Fargo Center as you approach the city.

💧

Chain of Lakes

Look for Bde Maka Ska, Lake Harriet, and Lake of the Isles as the plane maneuvers for landing.

🏟️

U.S. Bank Stadium

The giant, black glass 'ship-like' structure of the Vikings' stadium is a prominent landmark on the right.

The right side is the 'money side' for this short hop. It provides the best perspective of the deep iron mines in Hibbing and the most dramatic view of the Minneapolis city center. On evening flights, you may catch a reflection of the sunset off the glass skyscrapers downtown.

Left Side Highlights
7.5
🚜

Mesabi Iron Range

Expansive views of the iron ore deposits and terraced mining pits that define the northern Minnesota landscape.

🌲

Superior National Forest

Dense stretches of boreal forest transitioning into the mixed hardwoods of central Minnesota.

🌊

Mille Lacs Lake

One of the state's largest inland lakes, often visible to the southeast during the mid-portion of the flight.

🏙️

St. Paul Skyline

Clear views of the Minnesota State Capitol and the historic downtown St. Paul skyline during the final approach.

🏟️

Allianz Field

The distinctively curved, illuminated exterior of the soccer stadium located between the two downtowns.

Sit on the left side for morning flights to keep the sun behind you. This side is superior for spotting the St. Paul skyline and the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers just before touchdown. Keep an eye out for the white dome of the State Capitol building.
