Left Side of the Plane

The left side provides an expansive view of the Marovo Lagoon's interior, the Russell Islands, and the lush volcanic peaks of the New Georgia Group.

Left Side Highlights
9.2
🏝️

Guadalcanal Coastline

Dramatic views of the northern beaches and dense rainforest canopies of Guadalcanal as you climb out of Honiara.

🥥

Russell Islands

A stunning cluster of islands including Pavuvu and Banika, famous for their vast coconut plantations and intricate shorelines.

🌋

Mount Mariu

The prominent volcanic peak on Gatoke Island serves as the majestic southern gateway to the Marovo Lagoon.

🌊

Marovo Lagoon Interior

Unrivaled views of the world's largest saltwater lagoon, showcasing a tapestry of turquoise water and hundreds of tiny emerald islands.

🛶

Seghe Point

As the flight nears Ramata, you can often spot small traditional canoes traversing the calm waters between the reef patches.

Sit on the left for the most consistent land views. Morning flights are ideal as the sun will be behind the aircraft, illuminating the vibrant turquoise hues of the lagoon without causing glare on the window. Keep your camera ready about 20 minutes before landing when the aircraft descends over the Marovo Lagoon's intricate reef systems.

Right Side Highlights

🌋

Savo Island

A near-perfect volcanic cone rising steeply from the sea, located just north of the flight path shortly after takeoff.

🚢

Ironbottom Sound

Look down into the deep blue waters where numerous WWII shipwrecks lie, a site of massive historical significance.

⛰️

Santa Isabel Peaks

On clear days, the distant, rugged mountains of Santa Isabel Island are visible across the New Georgia Sound.

💎

Ramata Barrier Reef

The final approach offers a spectacular view of the outer barrier reef where the deep indigo ocean crashes against the bright coral edge.

The right side is excellent for spotting Savo Island and the 'Slot' (New Georgia Sound). While you see less of the inner lagoon, you get a better perspective of the sheer drop-offs of the outer reef system near Ramata. Be aware of the afternoon sun, which can be quite intense on this side of the aircraft during the WNW heading.
