Which side of the plane to sit from Hanamaki Airport (Hanamaki) to New Chitose Airport (Sapporo)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side provides the most dramatic views of Japan's volcanic landscape, including a close-up of Mount Iwate shortly after takeoff and the iconic silhouette of Mount Yotei during the approach to Hokkaido.
Mount Iwate
A majestic stratovolcano known as 'Nambu Fuji' that dominates the skyline immediately west of Hanamaki.
Tsugaru Strait
The deep blue channel separating Japan's two largest islands, offering views of the Seikan Tunnel entry points.
Mount Yotei
A near-perfect volcanic cone in the Niseko area, often visible during the descent into New Chitose.
Lake Shikotsu
One of Japan's deepest and clearest caldera lakes, located just southwest of the airport.
Secure a window seat on the left (usually Seat A) for the best views of the mountains. Morning flights are preferred as the sun is behind you, perfectly illuminating the peaks of Iwate and the Hokkaido ranges. In winter, the contrast between the white snow and blue lakes is spectacular.
Shimokita Peninsula
The distinctive axe-shaped northern tip of Honshu, featuring rugged coastlines and Mutsu Bay.
Mutsu Bay
A massive, sheltered bay enclosed by the arms of Aomori, often dotted with fishing vessels.
Mount Tarumae
An active volcano with a rare and prominent lava dome located very close to the CTS flight path.
Kitakami Highlands
The ancient, forested mountain range extending along the eastern side of the Iwate flight path.
The right side (usually Seat K) is excellent for observing the unique coastal geography of the Shimokita Peninsula. It is the better side for sunrise views on early morning departures. Keep an eye out for the steaming dome of Mount Tarumae as the plane makes its final turn toward the runway.
