Our Recommendation
8.5

Left Side of the Plane

The left side provides a superior view of Japan's mountainous interior, including the volcanic ranges of Tohoku and the dramatic peaks of central Hokkaido.

Left Side Highlights
8.5
🏙️

Tokyo Cityscape

Aerial view of central Tokyo, including the Imperial Palace and Shinjuku skyscrapers shortly after takeoff.

🏔️

Mount Fuji

On clear days, the iconic cone of Fuji is visible in the distance to the west during the initial climb.

🌋

Nasu Mountains

Dramatic volcanic peaks and highland plateaus visible as the plane crosses northern Kanto.

💧

Lake Towada

A magnificent deep blue caldera lake nestled on the border of Akita and Aomori prefectures.

🏔️

Daisetsuzan Range

Hokkaido's highest mountain range, often covered in snow and known as the Roof of Hokkaido.

🏞️

Lake Kussharo

Japan's largest caldera lake, offering a spectacular view just before the final descent into Memanbetsu.

For the best mountain views, sit on the left side. If you are on an early morning flight, the lighting on the Daisetsuzan range is particularly stunning. Keep an eye out for Mt. Fuji within the first 15 minutes of departure if heading north from Haneda's C-runway.

Right Side Highlights
7.8
🗼

Tokyo Skytree

Clear views of the world's tallest tower and the Sumida River during the departure phase.

🌊

Sanriku Coast

The rugged, saw-toothed coastline of northeastern Honshu meeting the Pacific Ocean.

🐚

Matsushima Bay

One of Japan's three most scenic views, dotted with hundreds of pine-clad islets.

🌬️

Cape Erimo

The dramatic southern tip of Hokkaido where the mountains drop directly into the sea.

❄️

Okhotsk Drift Ice

In February and March, look for the white sheets of drift ice floating in the sea near the arrival airport.

The right side is excellent for morning flights to avoid the harsh glare of the sun. It is also the best side for seeing the Okhotsk Sea and seasonal drift ice during the winter months. Watch for the Pacific coastline of Tohoku for about 30-40 minutes mid-flight.
