HUN → RMQ
Which side of the plane to sit from Hualien Airport (Hualien) to Taichung Ching Chuang Kang Airport (Taichung)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers the most dramatic views of the Central Mountain Range's high peaks, including Hehuanshan, and a panoramic sweep of the Taichung Basin during the descent.
Pacific Blue
The deep azure waters of the Pacific Ocean immediately visible during the initial climb from Hualien.
Central Mountain Spine
Direct views of the high-altitude peaks of the Central Mountain Range as the plane crosses the island's center.
Taichung Basin
A full view of the sprawling Taichung metropolitan area and its skyscrapers during the landing approach.
Sun Moon Lake
On clear days, distant views of Taiwan's most famous lake can be spotted to the south of the flight path.
Sit on the left for the best mountain photography. Flights between Hualien and Taichung are short, so have your camera ready immediately after takeoff. Morning flights (before 10:00 AM) are highly recommended, as the Central Mountain Range frequently becomes obscured by clouds and mist in the afternoon. Look for the sudden transition from steep green slopes to the urban landscape of the west coast.
Qixingtan Bay
The stunning crescent-shaped pebble beach located right next to the Hualien Airport runway.
Taroko Gorge Mouth
The dramatic entrance to the world-famous marble gorge where the Liwu River meets the sea.
Shei-Pa National Park
Views of the northern peaks, including the famous 'Holy Ridgeline' and Xueshan (Snow Mountain) in the distance.
Taichung Port
Massive cargo ships and the iconic rows of white wind turbines lining the western coastline near the airport.
The right side is ideal for seeing the rugged northern coastline of Hualien and the entrance to Taroko Gorge. During the approach to RMQ, the right side provides a clear view of the Taiwan Strait and the industrial maritime activity of Taichung Port. Like the left side, visibility is best in the early morning. Be aware that the steep climb out of HUN means the ground disappears quickly, so look down early for the marble factories near the airport.
