HVGBVG

Which side of the plane to sit from Valan Airport (Honningsvag) to Berlevåg Airport (Berlevag)?

Our Recommendation
8.7

Right Side of the Plane

The right side offers a superior vantage point over the dramatic fjord systems and rugged tundra of the Nordkinn Peninsula, providing a closer look at the unique geology of Northern Norway.

Right Side Highlights
8.7
🏞️

Laksefjorden

A massive, deep fjord system with sheer cliffs and winding waterways carved by glaciers.

🏘️

Kjøllefjord

A classic Arctic fishing village tucked into a sheltered bay surrounded by towering mountains.

🦌

Nordkinn Peninsula

Desolate, lunar-like landscapes of the high tundra where herds of reindeer are often seen.

🌊

Tanafjorden

Crossing the expansive waters of one of Finnmark's largest fjords just before landing.

⛰️

Tanahorn

A prominent and iconic mountain peak that marks the final approach into Berlevåg.

The right side is best for photography of the Norwegian coastline. Since these flights are operated by Widerøe's Dash 8 aircraft at low altitudes, the land details are very sharp. Watch for the dramatic color shift in the rock formations. During the midnight sun (May-July), the lighting on the fjords is spectacular at any hour. This side also provides the best views of the approach into the narrow Berlevåg airstrip.

Left Side Highlights
7.2
🌊

Barents Sea

Infinite views of the deep blue Arctic Ocean stretching toward the North Pole.

🏔️

Kinnarodden

The northernmost point of mainland Europe, a sharp and remote rocky cape.

🚨

Slettnes Lighthouse

The world's northernmost mainland lighthouse, visible as a lone white tower on the Gamvik coast.

🧊

Arctic Horizon

Vibrant pastel gradients on the horizon, especially prominent during the long blue hour or midnight sun.

Sit on the left if you want a chance to spot whales in the Barents Sea during winter months. This side offers the best view of the 'top of the world' feeling, but be prepared for mostly water views once clear of the capes. If flying during winter nights, this is the side to watch for the Northern Lights over the ocean.
