Our Recommendation
7.8

Left Side of the Plane

The left side provides the most dramatic views of the Appalachian ridge-and-valley formations shortly after takeoff and offers a more direct view of the Ozark National Forest during the latter half of the journey.

Left Side Highlights
7.8
⛰️

Appalachian Ridges

Distinctive parallel mountain ridges of West Virginia seen shortly after reaching cruising altitude.

🌳

Monongahela National Forest

Expansive views of dense, high-elevation forests covering the rugged Allegheny Mountains.

🐎

Bluegrass Region

The rolling green hills and horse farm country of central Kentucky.

💧

Mississippi River Crossing

A panoramic view of the massive waterway winding through the heart of the country.

🌲

Ozark National Forest

The deep green plateaus and river-carved canyons of northern Arkansas and southern Missouri.

Choose the left side for morning flights to keep the sun behind you for better photography. Watch for the sharp geometric lines of the Appalachians about 20 minutes after departure from IAD. During autumn, this side offers particularly vibrant colors over the Ozark Plateau.

Right Side Highlights
7.4
🏞️

Shenandoah Valley

Beautiful views of the valley floor bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains during the initial climb.

🚢

Ohio River Valley

Broad views of the meandering Ohio River and the industrial towns along its banks.

🏙️

St. Louis Skyline

Potential distant views of the Gateway Arch and the St. Louis metropolitan area depending on the flight path.

🛶

Missouri Ozarks

The northern slopes of the Ozark mountains featuring winding rivers like the Current and Jacks Fork.

✈️

Tulsa Approach

Excellent views of the Arkansas River and the urban layout of Tulsa during the final descent.

The right side is ideal for afternoon flights to avoid the harsh glare of the southern sun. Keep an eye out for the distinctive loop of the Ohio River near Louisville. In winter, this side often provides clearer views of the snow-dusted Midwestern plains.
