Our Recommendation
8.2

Right Side of the Plane

The right side provides more consistent views of the dramatic Sierra Madre Oriental mountain peaks and the rugged terrain of the Mexican plateau, along with the Rio Grande border crossing.

Right Side Highlights
8.2
🏙️

Houston Skyline

Excellent views of Downtown Houston and the Medical Center immediately after departure from IAH.

🐍

Rio Grande / Río Bravo

The winding river marking the international border between the United States and Mexico.

⛰️

Sierra Madre Oriental

Dramatic, jagged limestone ridges and deep canyons that define the eastern edge of the Mexican Plateau.

🏜️

High Desert Plateau

Arid landscapes of San Luis Potosí featuring unique geological formations and desert vegetation.

⛪

San Miguel de Allende

In the distance during the descent, the colorful colonial architecture of the Guanajuato region may be visible.

Choose the right side for the most dramatic mountain scenery as you approach Central Mexico. On afternoon flights, be prepared for some sun glare; however, the sunset views over the Mexican highlands can be spectacular. Look for the Peña de Bernal monolith during the final approach into QRO.

Left Side Highlights
7.4
🌊

Texas Gulf Coast

Aerial views of the Texas shoreline and the transition from the humid coastal plains to the Gulf of Mexico.

🏝️

Laguna Madre

A long, shallow hypersaline lagoon visible as the flight tracks south towards the Mexican border.

🌾

Tamaulipas Lowlands

Vast stretches of agricultural fields and river basins in the eastern states of Mexico.

⛰️

Sierra Madre Eastern Slope

The green, lush eastern face of the mountain range where moisture from the Gulf hits the highlands.

Sit on the left for morning flights to avoid direct glare from the sun. This side is better for spotting the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico during the initial half of the journey. If departing from Houston to the south, you might catch a glimpse of Galveston Bay shortly after takeoff.
