IGG → AKN
Which side of the plane to sit from Igiugig Airport (Igiugig) to King Salmon Airport (King Salmon)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers superior views of the dramatic Aleutian Range and the volcanic landscape of Katmai National Park and Preserve during this short hop across the Alaska Peninsula.
Katmai National Park
Glacier-carved peaks and rugged wilderness of the Aleutian Range visible to the south.
Kvichak River Braids
The intricate, silver-threaded patterns of one of the world's most productive salmon rivers.
Mount Katolinat
A prominent mountain standing guard near the entrance to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.
Alagnak Wild River
A designated Wild and Scenic River that winds through the tundra towards Bristol Bay.
Choose the left side for morning flights to see the sun illuminate the snow-capped volcanoes. In late summer, look closely at the river bends for the red shimmer of spawning sockeye salmon. This side provides the most 'Alaskan' mountain scenery.
Lake Iliamna
Views of Alaska's largest freshwater lake retreating behind the aircraft after takeoff.
Tundra Kettle Ponds
A mosaic of thousands of small glacial ponds reflecting the sky across the flat landscape.
Naknek River
The final approach follows the wide, sweeping curves of the river leading into King Salmon.
Bristol Bay Horizon
On clear days, the distant shimmer of the Bering Sea is visible to the west.
The right side is excellent for photographers interested in abstract patterns of water and land. It is also the best side to view the scale of Lake Iliamna immediately after departure from Igiugig. Polarization filters on cameras will help cut the glare from the many water bodies below.
