Which side of the plane to sit from Circle City /New/ Airport (Circle) to Fairbanks International Airport (Fairbanks)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side offers superior views of the rugged White Mountains National Recreation Area and more dramatic elevation changes as you fly over the Yukon-Tanana Uplands.
White Mountains
Striking limestone ridges and jagged peaks that stand out sharply against the surrounding green and gold tundra.
Steese Highway
The lonely gravel and paved road that serves as the only land connection between Circle and the outside world.
Wickersham Dome
A prominent hiking and navigation landmark located within the White Mountains National Recreation Area.
Goldstream Valley
Ancient mining sites and modern residences tucked into the hills just north of Fairbanks.
UAF Campus
The hilltop campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Museum of the North are visible just before touchdown.
The right side is ideal for photographers interested in geological formations. The White Mountains provide the most vertical interest on this route. For winter flights, this side offers incredible views of the low-angled sun hitting the snow-covered ridges, though the northern lights can occasionally be seen from either side if flying at night.
Yukon River Basin
The massive, winding artery of the Alaska interior stretching eastward toward the Canadian border.
Distant Alaska Range
On clear days, the jagged peaks of the Alaska Range, including Mt. Hayes and Mt. Deborah, are visible on the southern horizon.
Tanana Valley
A vast expanse of boreal forest and wetlands that defines the geography of interior Alaska.
North Pole & Eielson
During the final descent, catch glimpses of the suburban sprawl of North Pole and the heavy aircraft at Eielson AFB.
Sit on the left for the best chance to see the high peaks of the Alaska Range in the distance. This side is better during morning flights to avoid the direct glare of the southern sun. Look for the massive scale of the Tanana River as it converges with other local tributaries.
