JUVNAQ

Which side of the plane to sit from Upernavik Airport (Upernavik) to Qaanaaq Airport (Qaanaaq)?

Our Recommendation
8.9

Right Side of the Plane

The right side offers a front-row seat to the colossal Greenland Ice Sheet and the dramatic glacier calving fronts of Melville Bay.

Right Side Highlights
9.2
❄️

Greenland Ice Sheet

The seemingly endless white horizon of the world's second-largest ice mass.

🌊

Steenstrup Glacier

A massive outlet glacier where the ice sheet meets the sea in a wall of towering white cliffs.

⛰️

Melville Bay Nunataks

Isolated mountain peaks piercing through the thick ice sheet, creating a stark contrast.

🌅

Inglefield Fjord

A stunning, deep fjord system carved by ancient glaciers that leads the approach into Qaanaaq.

🔴

Red Cliff Peninsula

The distinctive iron-rich coastal cliffs that give the landscape a unique crimson hue near the destination.

This is the prime side for glacier viewing. During July and August, look for vibrant blue meltwater lakes on the surface of the ice sheet. Because you are flying north of the Arctic Circle, the 'Midnight Sun' will be visible to the north/east for much of the summer, providing constant illumination of the glaciers. The descent into Qaanaaq over the ice-choked fjord is particularly breathtaking on this side.

Left Side Highlights
7.4
🏝️

Upernavik Archipelago

A complex network of rocky islands and coastal settlements visible immediately after takeoff.

🧊

Baffin Bay Icebergs

A vast expanse of sea where massive icebergs drift southward through the deep blue water.

🏔️

Cape York

The rugged western tip of the Hayes Peninsula, a historic landmark for Arctic explorers.

🐋

North Water Polynya

Areas of open water surrounded by sea ice, often attracting whales and narwhals.

Sit on this side for the best views of the 'Iceberg Graveyard' in Melville Bay. If flying during the shoulder seasons, the low sun hitting the sea ice creates spectacular golden light effects. This side is also better for spotting the remote settlement of Savissivik if the pilot tracks slightly inland.
