KGT → CTU
Which side of the plane to sit from Kangding Airport (Kangding) to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (Chengdu)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side offers an extraordinary vantage point of the Gongga Massif, including Mount Gongga, the highest peak in Sichuan, which dominates the skyline shortly after departure from the high-altitude Kangding Airport.
Mount Gongga (Minya Konka)
Known as the 'King of Sichuan Mountains', this 7,556m peak is the star of the route, appearing massive and snow-capped on the southern horizon.
Hailuogou Glacier
Near Mount Gongga, you can often spot the white tongues of glaciers carving through the dark rock of the mountain valleys.
Dadu River Canyon
Observe the deep, dramatic winding canyon of the Dadu River as it cuts through the mountains below.
Erlang Mountain
The final major mountain barrier before the terrain flattens out into the fertile Sichuan Basin.
Sichuan Basin Cloud Sea
Witness the stark transition from the clear, thin air of the plateau to the thick, misty cloud cover often sitting over the basin.
Sit on the right side for the most iconic views in Chinese aviation. Mount Gongga appears very shortly after takeoff; have your camera ready immediately. Morning flights (before 10 AM) are highly recommended as the peaks are most likely to be clear of clouds. In winter, the snow cover on the entire range is breathtaking, but even in summer, the glaciers of Gongga remain visible.
Zheduo Mountain Range
Immediately after takeoff, witness the rugged peaks and high mountain passes that separate the Tibetan Plateau from the Sichuan Basin.
Mount Siguniang (Distance)
On clear days, the distant four peaks of Mount Siguniang can be seen far to the northeast rising above the clouds.
Labahe Nature Reserve
Fly over the lush, dense forests of the Qionglai Mountains, which are a primary habitat for the Giant Panda.
Chengdu Urban Sprawl
As the plane descends, the vast, grid-like expansion of Chengdu and its satellite cities fills the horizon.
The left side is excellent for viewing the broader expanse of the Hengduan Mountains and the dramatic drop-off into the basin. It is generally less prone to direct sun glare during morning flights heading east, allowing for better photography of the green mountain ridges. Look for the distinct line where the mountains meet the flat plains.
