KSCVIE

Which side of the plane to sit from Košice Airport (Kosice) to Vienna International Airport (Vienna)?

Our Recommendation
8.5

Right Side of the Plane

The right side provides a superior view of the dramatic Carpathian mountain ranges in Central Slovakia and a more frequent perspective of the Vienna city center during the standard approach into VIE.

Right Side Highlights
8.5
🏔️

High Tatras

Jagged, alpine peaks visible to the north, often snow-capped well into the spring season.

🌲

Low Tatras

Dense forest ridges and the peak of Ďumbier, the highest point of this mountain range.

🍇

Small Carpathians

Rolling hills covered in vineyards stretching from Bratislava toward the north.

🏙️

Vienna Skyline

The DC Tower, Danube Tower, and the historic spire of St. Stephen's Cathedral during the final approach.

🌊

Danube River

The winding 'Blue Danube' as it flows from Vienna toward the Slovak border.

For the best views of the Slovak mountains, book a morning flight when the sun is to the south. The High Tatras are most impressive in winter and early spring when they are stark white against the blue sky. As the flight is very short (approx. 40-50 minutes), stay alert as the transition from the mountains to the Vienna basin happens quickly.

Left Side Highlights
7.2
⛰️

Slovak Karst National Park

Expansive limestone plateaus and deep canyons near the border with Hungary.

💧

Lake Neusiedl

A massive, shallow steppe lake on the Austrian-Hungarian border, famous for its reed beds.

🏰

Forchtenstein Castle

A striking late-medieval fortification visible in the Rosalia Mountains during descent.

🌾

Pannonian Basin

Wide, flat agricultural plains that characterize the landscape of Western Hungary and Eastern Austria.

Sit on the left if you are flying in the late afternoon, as the sun will be behind you, illuminating the landscape perfectly. Watch for the glittering surface of Neusiedler See about 10 minutes before landing. This side is also excellent for seeing the wind farms that dominate the landscape of the Burgenland region.
