KTS β OME
Which side of the plane to sit from Brevig Mission Airport (Brevig Mission) to Nome Airport (Nome)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side offers a superior view of the rugged Kigluaik Mountains and the complex network of tundra lakes and rivers inland.
Teller Village
A remote IΓ±upiat community located at the narrow junction between Port Clarence and Grantley Harbor.
Kigluaik Mountains
Also known as the Sawtooth Range, these jagged peaks provide a dramatic backdrop to the Seward Peninsula.
Imuruk Basin
A vast, shallow lagoon area surrounded by marshy tundra and winding waterways.
Snake River Valley
The winding riverbed that guides the final approach into the Nome airport area.
Sit on the left for the best chance to see the Iditarod trail markers during the winter. Morning flights offer better lighting on the Kigluaik peaks, as the sun illuminates the western faces. Keep an eye out for muskoxen herds which are often spotted on the tundra slopes inland.
Port Clarence
A massive natural deep-water harbor used historically by whaling ships and the Coast Guard.
Point Spencer
A distinct, narrow sand spit that arcs out into the Bering Sea, creating a protected bay.
Bering Sea Ice
From November to May, enjoy views of the shifting pack ice and pressure ridges along the coast.
Nome Gold Beaches
The famous shoreline where gold was discovered in 1898, still active with small-scale dredging.
The right side is ideal for spotting marine life or offshore gold mining dredges near Nome. During the shoulder seasons, look for the 'sea smoke' rising off the open leads in the ice. This side provides a clearer view of the vastness of the Bering Sea and the unique coastal geography of the Seward Peninsula.
