Our Recommendation
7.8

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers a superior perspective of the sprawling river networks and dense tropical landscapes of Kalimantan (Borneo) and the stunning coral islands of the Spermonde Archipelago during the descent into Makassar.

Left Side Highlights

🌊

Selangor Coastline

View of the Malaysian coast and the busy Malacca Strait during the initial climb out of KUL.

🐍

Kapuas River Delta

Witness the massive, winding brown rivers of West Kalimantan as they snake through the rainforest toward the sea.

🌳

Borneo Interior

Expansive views of the dense tropical jungle and diverse terrain of central and southern Kalimantan.

🏝️

Spermonde Archipelago

Dozens of tiny, white-sand coral islands surrounded by turquoise reefs visible just before landing at UPG.

⛰️

Mount Lompobattang

The silhouette of this massive volcanic complex in South Sulawesi may be visible on the horizon during clear approaches.

The left side is ideal for morning flights as the sun will be behind or above the plane for much of the journey, reducing glare. Keep your camera ready about 60-80 minutes into the flight for the best river views over Kalimantan. During the monsoon season (December-March), morning flights offer the best chance to see the ground before afternoon cloud buildup.

Right Side Highlights
7.2
⛴️

Java Sea Transit

A vast blue expanse often dotted with cargo ships and local fishing vessels as you cross between islands.

🏝️

Karimunjawa Islands

If the flight path tracks slightly south, you may spot these remote, pristine islands in the distance.

🏙️

Makassar Cityscape

Excellent views of the Losari Beach waterfront and the dense urban center of Makassar during the final approach.

🏗️

Port of Makassar

One of Indonesia's busiest maritime hubs, visible with its large cranes and container ships near the coast.

For late afternoon flights, the right side offers spectacular sunset views over the Java Sea. This side is also better for spotting the urban layout and waterfront of Makassar if the aircraft approaches from the south. Be aware that the afternoon sun can be very intense on this side of the cabin, so keep the window shade partially down if flying between 2 PM and 4 PM.
