LAE → POM
Which side of the plane to sit from Nadzab Airport (Nadzab) to Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport (Port Moresby)?
Right Side of the Plane
While both sides offer dramatic views of the Owen Stanley Range, the right side provides a more comprehensive look at the winding Markham River during departure and a better angle of the Port Moresby harbor during the final approach.
Markham River
The massive, silty river system snaking through the valley floor immediately after departing Nadzab.
Kokoda Track
Aerial perspective of the rugged, razorback ridges and deep valleys where the historic trail traverses the mountains.
Port Moresby Harbor
Clear views of the Fairfax Harbour, the downtown CBD skyline, and the shipping vessels anchored in the bay.
Varirata Plateau
A glimpse of the lush green escarpments of the national park just outside the city limits during descent.
The right side is superior for history buffs wanting to trace the terrain of the Kokoda campaign. For the best views of the Port Moresby city center and the iconic APEC Haus, sit on the right. Try to book a flight between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM for the clearest atmosphere over the central highlands.
Huon Gulf
Panoramic views of the deep blue waters and the coastline stretching towards the Solomon Sea shortly after takeoff.
Mount Victoria
The highest peak of the Owen Stanley Range is often visible to the east, piercing through the cloud layer.
Bootless Bay
Stunning turquoise reefs and small islands visible as the aircraft begins its final descent into the capital.
Choose the left side for morning flights to see the sunrise over the Huon Gulf. This side is also excellent for spotting the coral reefs of the Papuan Barrier Reef just before landing at POM. Be aware that the Owen Stanley Range frequently develops heavy cloud cover after 10:00 AM, obscuring mountain peaks.
