LAS → MIA
Which side of the plane to sit from McCarran International Airport (Las Vegas) to Miami International Airport (Miami)?
Left Side of the Plane
The Left Side is generally preferred on the LAS-MIA route as it offers the highest probability of viewing the Grand Canyon shortly after takeoff and provides a stunning aerial entry into the Florida peninsula over Tampa Bay.
Lake Mead
Visible almost immediately after takeoff, the deep blue reservoir contrasts sharply with the surrounding red Mojave desert.
Grand Canyon
Depending on the specific flight path, the northern rim and the vast geological layers of the canyon are often visible to the north.
The Ozark Plateau
Rolling hills and dense forest cover as the plane transitions from the dry west to the humid eastern United States.
Mississippi River
The massive, winding waterway provides a clear landmark separating the central plains from the southeastern states.
Tampa Bay
Upon reaching Florida, you will likely cross the coast near Tampa, offering views of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and the Gulf of Mexico.
For the best photography, choose a morning flight to avoid direct glare, as the sun will be on the south (right) side of the aircraft. Keep your camera ready within the first 15-20 minutes for the best shots of the Nevada and Arizona landmarks. During the descent into Miami, look for the suburban sprawl of South Florida meeting the Atlantic coast.
Hoover Dam
A classic view of this engineering marvel can be spotted just south of the departure path out of Las Vegas.
Sonoran Desert
Expansive views of the arid Southwest, including the rugged mountains of New Mexico and West Texas.
New Orleans & Delta
If the flight path hugs the southern coast, the sprawling Mississippi River Delta and New Orleans may be visible.
The Everglades
As you descend into MIA, the vast, swampy 'River of Grass' stretches out to the horizon to the west of the city.
Miami Skyline
On final approach, particularly if landing towards the east, the skyscrapers of Downtown Miami and Brickell come into view.
The right side is excellent for sunset flights, as the sun will set over the Gulf of Mexico or the Everglades, creating a vibrant orange and purple sky. On the final approach into MIA, the right side usually offers the most iconic view of the Everglades National Park. Be aware that midday flights on this side can be quite warm and bright due to direct solar exposure.
