LAS → MSP
Which side of the plane to sit from McCarran International Airport (Las Vegas) to Minneapolis-St Paul International/Wold-Chamberlain Airport (Minneapolis)?
Right Side of the Plane
The right side is superior primarily for the immediate post-takeoff views of Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam, followed by a direct path over the highest peaks of the Colorado Rockies.
Hoover Dam
A premier aerial view of the historic dam and the bypass bridge, usually appearing within 5 minutes of takeoff.
Lake Mead
The expansive blue waters of the Colorado River reservoir contrasting sharply with the white 'bathtub ring' of the shoreline.
Colorado Front Range
Distant but impressive views of the snow-capped peaks of the Continental Divide as you cross into the Great Plains.
Denver Skyline
The high-rise buildings of downtown Denver and the sprawl of the metro area are often visible to the south.
Mall of America
As the plane lines up for the MSP runway, the massive retail complex is often visible just south of the airport.
Sit on the right for morning flights to witness a spectacular sunrise over the plains. The view of the Hoover Dam is brief; be ready to look out the window immediately after the landing gear retracts if the plane takes off toward the east. If landing from the south at MSP, this side provides the best view of the Minnesota River valley.
Valley of Fire
Vibrant red sandstone formations and ancient sand dunes located just north of the departure path.
Southern Utah Plateaus
Aerial perspectives of the rugged multi-colored ridges and deep canyons characterizing the High Plateaus.
Nebraska Sandhills
An endless expanse of grass-stabilized dunes that create a unique undulating texture on the landscape.
Upper Midwest Grid
The transition into the perfectly rectangular agricultural patchwork of Iowa and southern Minnesota.
For flights departing Las Vegas in the late afternoon, the left side is preferable to avoid the direct glare of the sun. It offers excellent views of the glowing red desert rocks at sunset. Keep an eye out for the deep incisions of the Virgin River early in the flight.
