LGA → LEX
Which side of the plane to sit from La Guardia Airport (New York) to Blue Grass Airport (Lexington KY)?
Left Side of the Plane
The left side is superior primarily for the departure sequence out of LGA, which frequently offers a direct, sweeping panorama of the Manhattan skyline and the Hudson River. It also provides excellent views of the Appalachian ridge-and-valley province during the cruise phase.
Manhattan Skyline
On a typical westbound departure, the left side provides a front-row seat to the Empire State Building, Central Park, and the dense skyscrapers of Midtown.
The Hudson River
A clear view of the historic waterway and the steep cliffs of the New Jersey Palisades immediately after takeoff.
Appalachian Ridges
As you cross Pennsylvania, observe the unique 'folded' mountain structures that look like giant waves frozen in time.
Ohio River Valley
Industrial landscapes and winding river bends near the border where Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky meet.
Downtown Lexington
Approaching from the east, you can often spot the cityscape of Lexington including the iconic blue-glass Big Blue Building.
Book a window seat on the left (Port side) for departures before sunset to catch the golden hour light hitting the Manhattan glass towers. During winter, the mountain ridges in PA are much more defined under a dusting of snow. For the best NYC views, look out immediately within the first 3-5 minutes of flight.
Flushing Meadows
Aerial view of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and the Unisphere from the 1964 World's Fair.
Susquehanna River
Watch for the wide, shallow waters of the Susquehanna crossing through central Pennsylvania's farm country.
Allegheny National Forest
Massive stretches of dense green canopy that turn into a sea of orange and red during the autumn months.
Horse Farm Country
The quintessential Bluegrass landscape featuring perfectly manicured estates, white fences, and circular training tracks.
Keeneland Racecourse
Located directly adjacent to LEX, you can often see the historic limestone grandstands and the track just seconds before touchdown.
The right side (Starboard) is the winner for the landing sequence. LEX is surrounded by world-famous thoroughbred farms. If landing from the west, the right side looks directly down onto Keeneland Racecourse. This is particularly spectacular in April or October during the live racing meets when the grounds are bustling.
