Our Recommendation
8.8

Left Side of the Plane

The left side provides the most iconic views, starting with a panoramic departure over Lisbon's city center and ending with a dramatic close-up of Mount Pico, the highest peak in Portugal.

Left Side Highlights
8.8
🌆

Lisbon Skyline

Clear views of the Alfama district, the Tagus River, and the 25 de Abril Bridge shortly after takeoff from LIS.

🗿

Cristo Rei

The massive Sanctuary of Christ the King monument standing over the south bank of the river during the climb.

🌋

Mount Pico

A breathtaking view of the massive stratovolcano as you approach the island; its peak often pokes through the cloud layer.

🍇

UNESCO Vineyards

The unique, labyrinthine black basalt stone walls of the Pico vineyards near the coast during the final descent.

Sit on the left for the best chance to see the volcano peak regardless of the landing direction. On afternoon flights, the sun will be on the left/front-left side, so be prepared for some glare during the middle of the flight. If the plane circles before landing, this side offers the best look at the 'Lajido' landscape.

Right Side Highlights
7.4
🏰

Sintra Mountains

Aerial perspective of the lush hills of Sintra, including the Pena Palace and Moorish Castle, visible if departing toward the north.

📍

Cabo da Roca

The westernmost point of continental Europe, featuring dramatic cliffs and a lighthouse at the edge of the Atlantic.

🐉

São Jorge Island

During the approach to Pico, the long and slender neighboring island of São Jorge is clearly visible across the channel.

🌊

Azorean Channel

The deep blue waters between the 'Triangle Islands' where you can often spot the white wakes of inter-island ferries.

The right side is ideal for seeing the neighboring islands of the central group (São Jorge and sometimes Graciosa in the distance) during the descent. It is generally the 'shadier' side on westbound afternoon flights, making it easier to take photos of the Atlantic coastline without window reflections.
