Our Recommendation
8.5

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers a superior perspective of the Atlantic coastline, including views of other Canary Islands upon departure and the dramatic Portuguese shore and Porto city center during the approach.

Left Side Highlights
8.5
🌋

Mount Teide & Tenerife

Shortly after takeoff from LPA, look west to see the massive peak of Spain's highest mountain rising above the clouds on neighboring Tenerife.

🌊

Costa Vicentina

As you reach the mainland, the rugged and wild cliffs of southwest Portugal come into view, characterized by turquoise waters and secluded beaches.

🌉

Lisbon & Tagus Estuary

Visible in the distance, you can often spot the 25 de Abril Bridge and the sprawling white buildings of the Portuguese capital.

🏄

Nazaré & The Silver Coast

Look for the distinct headland of Nazaré, famous for the world's largest surfable waves, and the long stretches of sand along the Atlantic.

🍷

Douro River Mouth

On the final approach to Runway 35, the left side provides a stunning panorama of the Foz do Douro where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Book a window seat on the left (A) for sunset flights to enjoy the golden hour over the Atlantic. If landing to the north (Runway 35), you will see the Ribeira district and the iconic bridges of Porto just moments before touchdown. Early morning flights provide excellent lighting for photographing the Canary Islands without sun glare.

Right Side Highlights
6.5
🏙️

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Direct views of the island's capital and its busy port facilities immediately after departing LPA.

⛰️

Serra da Estrela

Inland views of Portugal's highest mountain range, often snow-capped in winter, visible as you fly north toward Porto.

🌳

Central Portugal Heartland

A mosaic of eucalyptus forests, olive groves, and small terracotta-roofed villages typical of the Portuguese interior.

🍇

Douro Valley Vineyards

On specific flight paths or if landing to the south (Runway 17), the terraced hills of the world-famous Port wine region are visible to the east.

The right side (F) is best for avoiding direct afternoon sun during this northbound flight. It offers better views of the inland topography and the rural landscapes of central Portugal. Watch for the change in vegetation from the arid Canary landscape to the lush, green hills of the Minho region as you descend.
