LPB → SRZ
Which side of the plane to sit from El Alto International Airport (La Paz) to El Trompillo Airport (Santa Cruz)?
Left Side of the Plane
While both sides are spectacular, the left side provides a more sustained view of the massive glaciers of the Cordillera Real and the dramatic, steep drop-off into the Yungas cloud forests.
Huayna Potosí
The iconic 6,088m pyramid peak visible almost immediately after takeoff from El Alto.
Cordillera Real
A continuous chain of snow-capped peaks extending north, showing the sheer scale of the high Andes.
The Yungas
Deep, emerald-green valleys where the mountains meet the Amazonian clouds in a sharp vertical descent.
Beni Basin Headwaters
The winding river systems forming at the base of the mountains as they transition into the tropical plains.
Book an early morning flight (before 09:00) to avoid the characteristic afternoon cloud build-up that often obscures the Yungas valleys. Sit as far forward as possible to avoid wing obstruction of the glaciated peaks.
Nevado Illimani
The massive three-peaked 'Guardian of La Paz' appears incredibly close during the initial climb and turn.
High Altiplano
The vast, arid high-altitude plateau stretching south toward the Oruro department.
Serranía de Santiago
Interesting geological rock formations and ridges as the plane crosses the 'Codo de los Andes'.
Santa Cruz 'Rings'
On approach to SRZ, you get a perfect view of the concentric ring-road urban planning of Santa Cruz city.
The right side offers the most intimate view of Illimani. Since SRZ is located in the heart of Santa Cruz, the right side often gets a better view of the city center and the Christ the Redeemer statue during the final approach.
