Our Recommendation
8.5

Right Side of the Plane

The right side is superior for this westbound transatlantic crossing because it provides a shaded vantage point for photography and captures the dramatic peaks of Northern Spain and the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains during the descent.

Right Side Highlights
8.5
🏔️

Picos de Europa

Stunning limestone massifs in Northern Spain visible within the first 45 minutes of flight.

⚓

Chesapeake Bay

If the flight path stays north, you may see the intricate inlets and bridges of the Maryland and Virginia coasts.

⛰️

Appalachian Mountains

The ancient, forest-covered ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains stretching across the horizon.

🏟️

Stone Mountain

The massive quartz monzonite dome located just northeast of Atlanta during the arrival sequence.

This is the best side for photography as the sun is positioned on the opposite side of the plane, reducing reflections. Look out for the snow-capped Cantabrian Mountains in winter. During arrival, if the plane lands toward the West, the right side provides an excellent view of the Atlanta city skyline in the distance.

Left Side Highlights
7.2
🌊

Portuguese Coastline

Aerial views of the rugged Atlantic coast and the mouth of the Tagus River shortly after departure.

🏝️

Outer Banks

The distinctive thin ribbon of barrier islands along the North Carolina coast during landfall.

🏙️

Charlotte Skyline

Depending on the specific air traffic control routing, a distant view of the Queen City's skyscrapers.

💧

Lake Lanier

A massive reservoir in northern Georgia that signals the final approach into the Atlanta metro area.

The left side faces south, meaning you will deal with significant sun glare for the duration of the 9-10 hour flight. It is best to keep your window shade partially closed over the ocean to prevent cabin heating, but open it as you cross the US coastline for a chance to see the Carolina capes.
