Our Recommendation
8.5

Left Side of the Plane

The left side offers a superior scenic experience, particularly during the approach into Cartagena. While both sides see the lush Andean terrain initially, the left side provides stunning vistas of the Caribbean coastline, the Barú peninsula, and the turquoise waters surrounding the Islas del Rosario as the aircraft descends towards the coast.

Left Side Highlights
8.5
⛰️

Western Cordillera

Aerial views of the rugged, emerald-green peaks of the Colombian Andes shortly after departing Rio Negro.

🐍

Cauca River

The winding brown waters of one of Colombia's most important rivers snaking through the valley floor.

🌊

Gulf of Morrosquillo

The first glimpse of the Caribbean Sea as the flight path moves north over the department of Sucre.

🏝️

Islas del Rosario

Small, coral-fringed islands with varying shades of blue water, visible during the final descent phase.

🏖️

Barú Peninsula

A clear view of the famous white sand beaches and the turquoise shoreline just before touching down.

For the most vibrant water colors, book a flight between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM when the sun is high. If landing on Runway 01 (coming from the south), sit on the left for the best view of the archipelago. Keep your camera ready about 15 minutes before landing.

Right Side Highlights
7.8
💧

Guatapé Reservoir

Immediately after takeoff, you may spot the sprawling blue fingers of the Peñol-Guatapé dam and the famous rock.

🌾

Mojana Wetlands

A complex network of marshes and water channels in the northern plains of Bolívar and Sucre.

🏙️

Cartagena Skyline

The modern skyscrapers of Bocagrande and Castillogrande rising against the Caribbean horizon.

🏰

Walled City

A bird's eye view of the historic colonial fortifications and the clock tower during the right-hand bank for approach.

🦅

La Popa Hill

The highest point in Cartagena, topped with a colonial convent, visible just before the wheels touch the tarmac.

The right side is excellent for viewing the 'old vs. new' contrast of Cartagena's architecture. If the flight approaches from the north over the sea to land on Runway 19, the right side will offer the best view of the historic center and the inner bay.
