Our Recommendation
8.5

Left Side of the Plane

The left side is generally superior for this route because it offers better views of the Chicago skyline on takeoff and a high probability of seeing Lake Tahoe during the descent into Sacramento.

Left Side Highlights
8.5
🏙️

Chicago Skyline

Dramatic views of the Willis Tower and downtown skyscrapers shortly after takeoff from Midway.

🌊

Mississippi River

Crossing the massive waterway at the border of Illinois and Iowa.

🏔️

Front Range Rockies

Panoramic views of the snow-capped Colorado peaks as the aircraft crosses the continental divide.

💎

Lake Tahoe

The deep blue waters of North America's largest alpine lake are often visible to the south during descent.

🌲

Eldorado National Forest

Dense evergreen canopies of the Sierra Nevada mountains just before entering the Central Valley.

Book an afternoon flight to keep the sun behind you. On departure, if the plane heads south before turning west, the left side gets the best view of the 'Loop'. Keep your camera ready about 25 minutes before landing for the Sierra Nevada crossing.

Right Side Highlights

🌽

Great Plains Grid

The mesmerizing geometric patterns of agricultural center-pivot irrigation across Nebraska.

⛰️

Medicine Bow Mountains

The rugged, rocky terrain of southern Wyoming and the northern stretches of the Rocky Mountains.

🧂

Great Salt Lake

The shimmering white salt flats and the vast, still waters of Utah's famous inland sea.

🏜️

Nevada High Desert

The classic 'basin and range' topography featuring desolate valleys and isolated mountain ridges.

🌋

Sutter Buttes

Known as the world's smallest mountain range, these volcanic remnants pop out of the flat Sacramento Valley floor.

Excellent for morning flights to avoid the glare of the southern sun. The Great Salt Lake is a major highlight on this side mid-flight. During the final approach, look north to spot the distinct circular shape of the Sutter Buttes.
