Our Recommendation
7.8

Right Side of the Plane

The right side is generally superior for this route as it offers the best chance to see the iconic Chicago skyline and the Indiana Dunes while crossing the southern tip of Lake Michigan, followed by a close-up of Ann Arbor and the Detroit River on approach.

Right Side Highlights
7.8
🏙️

Chicago Skyline

Depending on the specific ATC routing, you can often see the Willis Tower and the dense skyscrapers of downtown Chicago across the lake.

🏖️

Indiana Dunes

The unique sand dune formations and industrial coastlines of Gary and Michigan City are visible as you hug the southern lake curve.

🏈

Ann Arbor & The Big House

Clear views of the University of Michigan campus and the massive Michigan Stadium just minutes before beginning the final descent.

🌉

Detroit River & Canada

On final approach, catch the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor border, including the Renaissance Center.

🏭

Ford Rouge Complex

A bird's-eye view of Detroit's industrial heritage and the massive automotive manufacturing plants near Dearborn.

The right side is the 'scenic' side for urban landmarks. Try to book a window seat behind the wing to ensure an unobstructed view of Chicago. In winter, the frozen shelf ice along the Indiana and Michigan shorelines creates stunning geometric patterns visible from this side.

Left Side Highlights

🌊

Mississippi River

Immediate views of the Quad Cities area and the sweeping bends of the Mississippi River right after takeoff from MLI.

🏙️

Grand Rapids Vicinity

As the flight crosses into Michigan, you may see the urban sprawl of Grand Rapids to the north if the flight path tracks slightly higher.

🏛️

Lansing & State Capitol

A view of Michigan's capital city and the distinct cluster of government buildings and Michigan State University's campus.

💧

Lake Michigan Expanse

A deep blue horizon as you cross the mid-section of the lake, often showcasing the contrast between the water and the sandy western Michigan shoreline.

Sit on the left for softer lighting during morning flights, as the sun will be on the opposite side. This side provides a better view of the 'Mitten' interior and is often the better side for seeing Lake St. Clair if the plane enters DTW from the north.
